Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

Angry skies. This time of year we watch the sky closely because now is when we can get large hail, tornados and strong winds. Storms form over the mountains and front range, and they intensify as they move out across the plains. This one, which we had been watching for a few hours, arrived while Maret and I were doing our daily Crossfit workout.

This particular workout entailed, among other things, walking across the yard carrying a long metal barbell overhead while doing lunges. Not exactly prudent, given the constant lightning that crept up. First, we amended the metal barbell to rubber weights because we're not quite that stupid. Second, upon learning that we were under a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado warning, we stopped what we were doing all together, and started to batten down the hatches.

This entails closing all the windows, bringing in the laundry, and putting cars and tractors inside the barn. This storm, though centered south of us, was producing golf ball size hail, sixty mile an hour winds, along with three confirmed tornados.

The storm passed without incident, almost completely missing us. We had a nice sprinkle of rain, less than a tenth of an inch, but enough to cool things off and rinse away the anxiety. We watched as the sun came back out and lit up the back side of the storm as it moved further east, full of power and portent.
