Winter vs. Spring

This is the time of the year when winter is dueling spring, each season fighting for dominance and control. The sun shines warm, but the breezes are chilly enough to cut, and the ground is still cold. Too cold to germinate the 720 acres of corn seed we just planted.

Where the early morning shadows lay on the grass there remains a silvery frost, but where the sun has traversed across those shadows there is nothing but dew, leaving briefly an icy white sundial.

As soon as the sun rises, the cows and horses eat their grain and/or hay, then they align themselves in full solar array. They stand perfectly still, at the perfect angle, taking in the heat, drawing their outline in white behind them.

The day is getting warm. The metal barn roof starts to tick under the intensifying sun. Spring is winning the battle.  Winter rules only the nights now, and has to share the mornings where it hides in the shadows.

such beautiful writing, such beautiful photos. made think about my own winter/ spring battle. scouring daily for any new growth, measuring by the centimeter, checking buds on the trees ( mine have yet to leaf out!),the excitement of seeing what made it through the winter, planning and examining. when is it going to warm up and at the same time in the back of my mind saying it is going to be way too hot pretty soon. on and on...
