Roxy is Always Watching.

Roxy, our Quarterhorse, keeps a tight rein on the goings on here. She, along with Chief, an elderly Appaloosa, Deuce, the bull, and four steers, have the run of the ninety acres north of the house. Roxie, is their self appointed herder who keeps everyone together, and just so. She herds them into the corral, and she damn sure will chase them out if she feels like it. And she often feels like it.

Yesterday, being a gorgeous, warm Saturday, had Maret, Ella, and myself working hard at the ranch. Mare was pruning, planting, mulching, and prepping the garden. Ella was either pulling staples from a barbed wire fence we are removing, or she was playing on a rope hung high in an elm tree. I was busy rebuilding our corrals.

Roxy brought everyone into the corral, where they hung out all day. They were so curious about the new corral that they were all up in my business. They were in all my tool buckets, they sniffed each new post ,and they had to lick both tractors I was using. They licked the leather gloves out of my back pocket. The steers ate alfalfa. Deuce scratched his sizable rear on a post, then laid down for a nap. Mare brushed Roxy and Chief. Everyone was warm, sleepy and satiated.

Finally, Deuce got up and slowly sauntered out to pasture. As he disappeared over the hill, Roxy rounded up Chief and the steers, and herded them out. She had to. She had to make it seem like it was her idea. That bull just doesn't ever listen.

Reading this blog entry I was reminded of using the scraper tool when my horses were shedding out in the spring and the blow back of horse hair into my mouth and nose, spitting to get the hair out of my mouth and wiping my tongue on my shirt...yuck, horse hair in the mouth!
